Loving and caring for others

The love and attention we have dedicated to the children of southern Madagascar since 1997 reflects the meaning of the Malagasy word MITIA, which we have chosen as the name for our association.
The ongoing commitment of our members, through various means such as volunteering, donations, and organizing events, means we can take concrete and targeted actions in the fields of education, food aid, and medical assistance.
In the field of education, our goal is to provide schooling for many impoverished children in specific areas of the Toliara region where we are active. We cover all related costs, including civil registration (a prerequisite for attending school), uniforms, school supplies (notebooks and pens), and the monthly dues needed to pay teachers’ salaries.
During our annual trip to Madagascar, which typically takes place in October, we manage to deliver several dictionaries and French books to the schools we support, thanks to the help of friends in Brussels.
Another key objective of these trips is to visit villages and existing schools, identify their specific needs, and create new structures to improve the living and learning conditions of children and young people.
In the field of food aid, we ensure that students receive lunch, especially those from families affected by poverty or who they have been abandoned or orphaned, cannot afford it and, too often. For many, this is often their only meal of the day.
Our efforts also extend beyond the schools we support. We respond to emergencies in the region, often collaborating with other associations that align with our mission to tackle critical challenges such as cyclones, locust invasions, drought, and climate change, which severely affect southern Madagascar.
In terms of medical assistance, our mission is to provide care for the children and young people attending the schools we support.

The outcomes of our dedication to education
Education is a right recognized by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, school is one of While education is a fundamental human right, as enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and a key tool for overcoming underdevelopment, countless children worldwide remain out of school due to poverty, discrimination, or misconceptions held by their parents about its value.
Although school education is highly regarded and widely attended in urban areas, children from marginalized or impoverished families, as well as street children, often face significant barriers to education.
The situation is even more critical in rural areas, where school enrolment rates are as low as 20–30%. Many families in these regions perceive formal education as unnecessary for traditional livelihoods such as farming and herding. Additionally, even modest school fees—ranging from approximately €1–2 per month to support teachers’ salaries (€45–60 per month)—are often unaffordable for them.
Through years of dedicated work in Madagascar, we have witnessed the transformative power of education. Beyond equipping children with essential skills for the workforce, education fosters a sense of dignity, security, and respect for others. Even without uniforms, these children distinguish themselves through their newfound confidence and politeness.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, many children we have assisted have successfully completed primary school. Some have progressed to secondary education, and a dozen are now university students.
Given the challenging circumstances they face, these accomplishments are nothing short of extraordinary.
